Joseph Brant (1742-1807)
Thayendanegea (Joseph Brant) was chief of the Mohawk Indians. A Loyalist during the American Revolution, he became a zealous Christian who translated the Book of Common Prayer and the Gospel of Mark into the Mohawk language. At age 33 Brant went to London to learn more about the conflicts over Mohawk lands. George Romney painted Brant wearing a gorget presented to him by London government officials.
