Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)
Alexis de Tocqueville, shown here in a charcoal sketch, was a French aristocrat and political philosopher who visited America in 1835. He wrote his impressions in his book "Democracy in America." De Tocqueville was enraptured by the degree of freedom and industry he found here, chiefly concentrated in the northern states.
