Amelia Jenks Bloomer (1818-1894)

Amelia Bloomer was a temperance and women's rights reformer and editor. Desiring to provide a greater voice for the women's temperance movement, she founded the Lily, a monthly journal. This journal also became a platform for the women's suffrage movement. She is most commonly associated with the "Bloomer Costume," a short skirt and full Turkish trousers. Although she was neither the originator nor the most vigorous advocate, she did promote the new outfit in the Lily as a comfortable garment for women.
