Brooks Attacks Sumner
This is an illustration of South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks' assault on Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner in the U.S. Senate chamber. Brooks assaulted Sumner after he had delivered a speech criticizing slavery and Brooks' cousin Senator Andrew P. Butler.
