Abner Clark Harding (1807-1874)
Abner Clark Harding was a Republican congressman from Illinois. Harding enlisted as a private in the Union army and was eventually promoted to brigadier general for gallant service in repelling a Confederate attack on Fort Donelson in 1863, but he was forced to resign from the service due to poor vision. He was also a railroad financier who left a fortune of $2 million when he died.
