Count Ferdinand Adolf August Zeppelin (1838-1917)

Count Ferdinand Zeppelin was a German inventor, aeronaut, and army officer. He served in the American Civil War in the Union Army and in the Franco-Prussian War. From 1897 to 1900 he constructed his first airship, a dirigible balloon, named a 'zeppelin.'
