Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856-1915)
Booker T. Washington was an African-American educator and reformer who was the first president and principal developer of the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). He became the leading spokesman for Black Americans after the death of Frederick Douglass. His autobiographical work, "Up From Slavery," is his most famous literary work.
