Agnes Sutherland
Although Agnes Sutherland was from England, she was known as the "Scottish Nightingale." The vocalist came to the U.S. in 1857 and made her debut at Parkinson's Garden Concert, in Philadelphia and at Dodworth's Saloon, in New York. Sutherland then appeared in concert halls and variety houses across the U.S. In 1860 the composer Alphonse Laroche dedicated his "Scottish Nightingale Polka" to the singer. Sutherland poses here in a splendid gown for an unidentified photographer in New Haven, Connecticut.
