Adolphe Charles Adam (1803-1856)
A successful French composer, Adolphe Charles Adam first trained with his father - a pianist who taught at the Paris Conservatory. Beginning at age 28, the young composer produced an average of two operas per year until his early death - a total of fifty-three. Adam's work was typical of French music at that time - lush, theatrical, and tuneful. His compositions lent themselves equally to the opera singers and the ballet dancers. "Le Postillon de Longjumais" was Adam's most successful opera in the 19th century, but today he is best known for the ballet "Giselle."
