Agnes Ethel (1853-1903)
Agnes Ethel was an actress, the pupil of the famous Matilda Heron. Ethel made her debut on stage in 1868 at Jerome's private theater in New York, as Camille. Subsequently Ethel toured the United States. Augustin Daly cast her as the lead in Wilkie Collins's "Man and Wife" but she objected to the part on moral grounds and resigned. In 1870 Daly wrote the play "Frou-Frou" for Ethel. In 1872, when she had become an established star with Daly, she left to join A. M. Palmer's company, playing the lead in Sardou's "Andrea" (which Palmer shrewdly retitled "Agnes").
