Ada Dyas (1843-1908)
Ada Dyas was an actress. In 1871 she played both Laura and Anne Catherick in George Vining's production of Wilkie Collins's "Woman in White," at the Olympic Theatre in London. She made her U. S. debut with Augustin Daly's company but left because of Daly's policy of having no "stars" and joined the Wallack company. Dyas played Mrs. Ralston at the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia in 1887, and was then sent to California by A. M. Palmer. In 1890 she was still performing on the West Coast, at Victoria, British Canada. Back in London in 1892, Dyas played Goneril in Henry Irving's production of "King Lear" at the Lyceum Theatre. Edith Wharton's novel, "The Age of Innocence," immortalized Dyas as one of the lovers in Dion Boucicault's play, "The Shaughraun." She appears here in costume on an elaborate set, holding a sheet of paper, at the Sarony studio in New York City, circa 1870.
