Booker T. Washington (1856-1915)
Booker Taliaferro Washington was an African-American educator and reformer who was the first president and principal developer of the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). He became the leading spokesman for Black Americans after the death of Frederick Douglass. Washington's autobiographical work, "Up From Slavery" (1901), is his most famous literary work. Far from being a political radical, Washington's views were moderate: he wanted blacks to remain in their places and achieve advancement through vocational and industrial education.
