Amasa Walker (1799-1875)
Amasa Walker was a businessman, economist, and U.S. representative. He was the father of Francis Amasa Walker. Walker helped found Oberlin College and lectured there (and at other colleges) on political economy for many years. During the panic of 1857 he had an opportunity to put his monetary theories to the test and his experiment saved many Boston banks. Walker was elected as a Republican to Congress to fill a vacancy in 1862 and 1863. In 1866 he published his widely read work "The Science of Wealth: A Manual of Political Economy." Throughout his life he devoted himself to temperance, world peace, and abolition.
