James S. Wadsworth (1807-1864)
James Samuel Wadsworth was a brevet major general of volunteers in the Union Army. A wealthy New Yorker from Harvard and Yale with no military experience, Wadsworth volunteered his services to the Union Army without pay. After 1st Bull Run he was swiftly promoted to brigadier general of volunteers (August, 1861). On the second day of the Wilderness campaign he was shot in the head and died in a Confederate field hospital. Wadsworth was brevetted major general of volunteers for Gettysburg and the Wilderness.
