Alexander S. Webb (1835-1911)
Alexander Stewart Webb was a brevet major general in the Union Army. He was graduated from West Point (1855), where he then taught. An artillerist, he won praise at Antietam and Chancellorsville. On the third day of Gettysburg, he distinguished himself for his leadership in the face of Pickett's Charge, for which he won a Congressional Medal of Honor. Webb was brevetted major general of volunteers. After the war he was president of the City College of New York for some thirty years. Webb appears here in a brigadier general's uniform, early in the war.
