Albert Thorwaldsen (1768-1844)
Albert Thorwaldsen (or Thorvaldsen) was a world-famous Danish sculptor, son of an Icelander. His neoclassical monument to Pope Pius VII stands in St. Peter's. Thorwaldsen's famous statue of Christ was executed in Rome in 1821 for a church in Copenhagen. He designed a monument to the battle of 1792 for the Glacier Garden in Lucerne. This steel engraving is by John Sartain of Philadelphia for the "Eclectic" magazine, after the original by F. Krueger.
