Donald G. Mitchell (1822-1908)

Donald Grant Mitchell was an agriculturist, gardener, and writer, better known as Ik Marvel. He was Washington correspondent for the New York "Morning Courier." In 1844 he went with the U.S. consul to England, then traveled throughout Europe, and wrote about it in "Fresh Gleanings" (1847). He wrote many historical, satirical, literary, and agricultural books. Mitchell made his Connecticut home, "Edgewood," a model farm, and wrote a series of volumes about it.
