Alexander Williamson

Alexander Williamson was hired by Mary Todd Lincoln in September, 1861, to tutor her children, Willie and Tad. The boys were tutored in the State Dining Room of the White House, where Mary Lincoln installed a desk and blackboard. After Willie's death in February, 1862, Williamson no longer taught the unruly Tad, but he remained a friend of the family and assisted Mrs. Lincoln in her financial difficulties.
