Gifford Pinchot (1865-1946)
Gifford Pinchot was a forester, conservationist and politician. He was the first American to make forestry his profession. Pinchot became the head of the newly formed Forest Service (1898-1910) in the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft. He worked to make the Forest Service a regulatory agency incorporating the European forestry philosophy of balancing preservation with the commercial use of natural resources. He was later elected governor of Pennsylvania and served for two terms (1923-29, 1931-35).
