George H. Thomas (1816-1870)

George Henry Thomas was a Union general who was known as the “Rock of Chickamauga,” for his stand on September 20, 1863, which saved the Union army from complete rout. Thomas was placed in command of the Army of the Cumberland in October, 1863, and served under Ulysses S. Grant around Chattanooga and under General Sherman in the Atlanta campaign.
