Alfred H. Terry (1827-1890)
Alfred Howe Terry was a major general in the Union Army. He began the Civil War as a militia officer, taking a regiment to Washington early on. Terry was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers in April, 1862. When Butler failed to take Fort Fisher, Terry was assigned to try it. After two days of bombardment, he captured the fort and the city, for which he received the Thanks of Congress. After the Civil War he was George Custer's superior when Custer exceeded orders and was killed at Little Big Horn.
