Daniel McFarland (b.1820)

Daniel McFarland was a Tammany henchman, frequently inebriated, who became a cause celebre in 1869 and 1870. His wife, Abby, divorced him. She planned to marry Albert Richardson, a popular author and "New York Tribune" editor. McFarland shot Richardson in the office of the "Tribune." On his deathbed Richardson was married to Abby McFarland by Henry Ward Beecher. A deliberate campaign to vilify Richardson caused McFarland to be acquitted, much to popular approval.
