Brooklyn Bridge, Opening Day
The Brooklyn Bridge, made necessary because of a surge of residential growth in Brooklyn in the 1860s, was commenced in 1870. The designer was John Augustus Roebling, and the builder was his son. The great project, the first public bridge to connect Manhattan to Long Island, was completed in 1883. Here it is on opening day in May, 1883.
