Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862)
Albert S. Johnston became a major-general in the CSA after a successful career with the U.S. army and the Texas revolutionary forces in the Mexican War. One of the South's ablest commanders, he was killed at Shiloh in 1862. This carte de visite is an engraved portrait of Johnston in his Confederate general's uniform. It is based on a photograph of him in civilian clothes when there were no other pictures available of the great general in uniform.
