Albert Sidney Johnston (1803-1862)

Albert S. Johnston became a major-general in the CSA after a successful career with the U.S. army and the Texas revolutionary forces in the Mexican War. One of the South's ablest commanders, he was killed at Shiloh in 1862. The photo shows how the uniform was skillfully painted on a photograph of him in civilian clothes when there were no other pictures of the great general in uniform. He is pictured here in a U.S. army uniform before the Civil War.
