Washington Irving (1783-1859)
Washington Irving was a short story writer, essayist, poet, biographer, and columnist. He is best known for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." He was considered the first American author to achieve international fame. This carte de visite of an engraved print was made when Irving was a young man.
