Andrew A. Humphreys (1810-1883)

Andrew Atkinson Humphreys was a brigadier general in the Union Army. He was a topographical engineer and George McClellan's topographical chief. When Winfield S. Hancock had to relinquish command of the 2nd Corps because of his wound from Gettysburg, Grant chose Humphreys for the post, which he kept until the surrender at Appomattox. In 1866 he was appointed chief engineer with the regular rank of brigadier general. He is shown here holding his horse at Balloon Camp.
