Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859)

Alexander von Humboldt was a German naturalist. He is best known for his explorations of Central and South America. In addition to his extensive naturalist excursions, Humboldt did research in many other fields, such as forestry, astronomy, chemistry and mineralogy. He was also a diplomat to European courts. Humboldt published a great deal about his discoveries. The most widely read is the five-volume "The Cosmos" (1845-62). This is a copy of a drawing.
