Edmund Kean (1789-1833)

Edmund Kean grew up as a waif and a stray in London. His theatrical debut as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice" in 1814 was a triumph. He became one of the greatest English tragic actors, especially known for his Shakespearean villains. This is a drawing of Kean as Gloucester in Shakespeare's "King Lear."
