Clinton Bowen Fisk (1828-1890)
Fisk was a Union general and a prohibitionist. The Civil War found him living in St. Louis. In 1862 he was made brigadier general of volunteers, and eventually received his major-generalcy. After the war he opened a school for black freedmen, which was chartered in 1867 as Fisk University. It was one of the earliest approaches to the problem of African-American education. In 1886 Fisk became the Prohibitionist Party's candidate for governor in New Jersey.
