Andrew Hull Foote (1806-1863)

Andrew H. Foote entered the navy at age sixteen. He was a temperance crusader and was responsible for the abolishment of the grog ration. He instituted religious worship on his ships. Foote strove to abolish the slave trade. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was promoted to captain, in 1861. In 1862 he was commissioned rear admiral.
