David Davis (1815-1886)

Davis was an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1862 to 1877 and a U.S. senator from Illinois. Davis is perhaps best known as a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, managing his campaign in 1860. At the request of the family he became administrator of Lincoln's estate. Davis also presided over the eighth judicial circuit in Illinois for fourteen years (1848-62). Davis is photographed here in his judicial robes.
