"Fort Harmar in 1790"
In 1784, General Josiah Harmar was sent to the Ohio frontier by the Continental Congress to help protect the settlers who were being harassed by the Native Americans. In 1785, he had his troops build Fort Harmar, a pentagon-shaped federal fort on the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers. They were charged with keeping squatters from occupying land north and west of the Ohio River as agreed to in a previous treaty with the local Native American Indians.
