"A Pow-wow at the White House"
During his administration, Rutherford Hayes tried to stop the policy of uprooting Native Americans and moving them to Indian Territory. He also reformed the Indian Bureau and created the Indian Police, generally encouraged Native Americans to become educated and to become American citizens. In this illustration, from "Harper's Weekly," January 22, 1881, the president receives a large group of Native Americans at the White House.
