After the Election

In one of his first moves as president, Rutherford B. Hayes ordered withdrawal of Federal troops from the last two carpetbag states, Louisiana and South Carolina, thus putting an end to radical Reconstruction. In this illustration, drawn by C. S. Reinhart, President Hayes holds a child, which represents the South. The woman on the left represents the Democratic party, whose child (the South) has been stolen from her. The sign in the middle reads "Strayed from his home! My darling south was last seen in the company of an elderly person who claimed to be his guardian. A nation's gratitude shall reward him who restores my son to his distressed mother."
