Garfield's bed is surrounded by people. The two women in the foreground are Garfield's wife Lucretia (left) and his daughter Mary (right). The three young men in the left foreground are probably three of Garfield's four sons. Garfield was assassinated by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, but it was not until September 19 that he died.
