"Forbidding the Banns"
The title is a reference to the old custom of reading the banns of marriage. James Garfield stands beside Uncle Sam preparing to be married. On the far left is Democratic chairman William Barnum, who runs in with a baby labeled "Credit Mobilier." This is a reference to Garfield involvement in the Credit Mobilier scandal, to which Garfield replies "But it was such a little one!" The two bridesmaids are Carl Schurz (left) and Whitelaw Reid (right). Behind them is Republican committee chairman Marshall Jewell. From left to right in the background are Don Cameron, George Robeson, John Logan and Roscoe Conkling. The cartoon was made by Joseph Keppler for "Puck."
