American Horse (1840-1908)
This is a photograph of a Oglala Sioux Native American, who was known in the English language, as American Horse. In the Sioux language his name was Was-i-cum-ta-sumka. The Oglala Sioux Chief was an advocate of cooperation with the American government and education for his people.
