John Quincy Adams, "Old Man Eloquent" (1767-1848)
This is an engraving of a daguerreotype taken by Philip Haas in 1843. Adams was the sixth president of the United States and the first son of a president to attain the office. He also served as secretary of state under James Monroe, becoming the chief architect of the Monroe Doctrine. Adams was serving in the House of Representatives at the time of this photograph, and is the only ex-president ever to do so. He served in Congress for seventeen years, earning the nickname "Old Man Eloquent." He died in 1848 after suffering a fatal stroke on the floor of the House of Representatives.
