John Quincy Adams (1767-1848)

This engraved portrait of John Quincy Adams standing and leaning on a table with books shows him near the end of his life. He was the sixth president of the United States, and the first son of a president to attain the office. He also served as secretary of state under James Monroe, becoming the chief architect of the Monroe Doctrine. He is the only ex-president ever to serve in the House of Representatives. He served in Congress for seventeen years, becoming the most passionate and respected liberal voice in Washington.
