"Cession of Louisiana"

Constantino Brumidi painted this mural in 1876, in the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol. It depicts the American diplomats James Monroe and Robert Livingston meeting with the Marquis Barbé-Marbois to discuss the purchase of the Louisiana territory for the United States. The Louisiana Purchase went into effect in 1803.
