"Matty's Dream"
In this 1840 political cartoon, Martin Van Buren flees the White House in his nightshirt, driven by nightmares of cider barrels with William Henry Harrison's head. The cider barrel was the symbol of Whig presidential challenger William Henry Harrison. Van Buren is met by political allies and senators John Calhoun and Thomas Hart Benton who try to calm him down. This lithograph was engraved by Edward Williams Clay and published by John Childs.
