John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937)
John Davidson Rockefeller was an American industrialist and philanthropist. He founded the Standard Oil Company in 1870 which dominated the petroleum industry. After expanding his oil empire into mining, shipping, and banking enterprises, Rockefeller's fortune ballooned and he became a philanthropist. He founded the University of Chicago, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Rockefeller University which does medical research and contributed to many other charitable organizations.
