Students at Howard University

Here African-American students stand outside and on the balcony of the main hall of Howard University. Howard was one of nine black colleges founded immediately following the Civil War. It was named for General Oliver O. Howard, a Civil War hero, who was both a founder of the University and, at the time, Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau.
