Henry Highland Garnet (1815-1882)
Henry Highland Garnet was born a slave in Maryland. He was active in the black state convention movement, and supported the free produce movement, which advocated boycotting all products made by slave labor. In 1865 he became the first African-American to preach a sermon in the White House. He was appointed U.S. minister to Liberia in 1881
