"The Misses Cooke's School Room, Freedman's Bureau"

This illustration from Frank Leslie's illustrated newspaper shows young African-Americans in a classroom learning to read. In the spring of 1866 Congress enlarged the scope of the Freedmen's Bureau, empowering it among other things to build schools and to hire teachers.
