This wood engraving of a drawing by Thomas Nast originally appeared in the March 16, 1867 issue of Harper's Weekly. The illustration depicts an African American voting in an election in the Georgetown section of Washington, DC. President Andrew Johnson has his back turned to the man as he carries "the suffrage veto."
