George Lewis Gillespie (1841-1913)

George Lewis Gillespie graduated second in the West Point class of 1862. During the Civil War he was an assistant engineer of the Army of the Potomac and in 1864 was the chief engineer of the Army of the Shenandoah. He received the Medal of Honor for carrying dispatches through enemy lines under withering fire to General Sheridan at Cold Harbor, Virginia. He was chief of the Army Corps of Engineers after the Civil War.
