Hamlin Garland (1860-1940)
Hamlin Garland was an American writer who was one of the early realists and the first to bring authentic, firsthand accounts of Midwestern farm life to American literature. Garland advocated the responsibility of the literary artist to challenge the establishment, and provided insightful depictions not only of farmers, but also of women's rights and the plight of Native American Indians.
