Adah Isaacs Menken was an actress and poet who is shown here with her dog. Menken was married several times to various men including the boxer John Heenan. Although this marriage became scandalous when it was discovered that she had failed to divorce her first husband. She also had an affair with the French writer Alexander Dumas.
